It's Easier if you supply dimension and weight ! However, i guess it's about 18 mm and 9 grams. If so, it's an Indian Mughal (The "Pretzl" thing is the giveaway), BI Bahloli. Issued under the rule of Nasir al-Din Muhammad Hamayun (1530-40;1555-56 AD) The top pic needs to be turned 90 degrees clockwise. The bottom pic is upside down. Mint: Agra. It's dated (Top pic) AH 941.
Hello THCoins, A fellow traveler gave me this silver coin on an airplane about 20 years ago. If I measure the weight & dimension accurately could you help me determine the country, date, & denomination? I don't have the coin with me right now but I could get it tonight. The traveler told me it was a Dhaka but that is the name of a place & not a denomination of which I am aware. Perhaps he said Tanka & I mis-understood it. I have heard that it looks like a mogul silver rupee. I've been unable to locate it in any of my Krause books 1600-present. Any guidance would be appreciated. BTW, the coin is depicted inside a 2x2 cardboard holder intended to hold a US quarter. I'd guess that the size is close to 22 mm diameter. That is just a guess until I can get my hands on the coin tonight.
This last one i think is a Shah Jahan 1/2 rupee. The left pic shows the Kalima, right pic defines the ruler. I think there is a burr hole just below the middle ? This likely has deformed the name a bit.
I am not familiar with India history. What date range is Shah Jahan? I will get better weight, dimension, & photos posted tonight.
1628-1658 AD. Note that there are lots of mints, this one may not be in Krause. Better look at Zeno for reference. If you provide more precise specs and better photos i will look at them. Note that i'm no Mugal expert, and as i'm in a different timezone, i won't be able to respond promptly.
Thank you very much for the information. I would also like to thank Jello for letting me piggy-back on his thread here. This coin is actually quite dear to me. I met this fellow and we traveled together and were comrades for a short time. During that time he learned that I collected coins as a hobby. He then proceeded to give me his coin (from home) which he carried with him. I told him honestly that the coin would always be properly cared for. I'm glad to finally learn how it should be properly identified & labeled. The weight is 11.20 grams. The diameter is 21. mm to 22. mm. The thickness is 3.4 mm. It appears to be made of good silver. Here are a few new photos depicting both sides.
thanks I just wish photos were better. I don't mind 89!!!!!! At my age stepping out to New country and one that has well a lot of choices. India has far to many little things for 60+ */*. To many . Like learning, have all the US . Just full up a World book.
I jius to say I check weight mms .mine 99.99 like this phone 11.17 was the only difference in it. The rim photo look same.only mines more worn etc. Thank You
@Collect89: With 11 gr it is a full rupee. Your larger photo's confirm that it's a Rupee of Shihab al-din Muhammad Shah Jahan, with a shroff mark through the name. Mint Surat, RY 32 = AH 1069 (last year of his rule) KM#235.23 In your last series the top photo's are upside down. the last should be turned 90 degrees anti-clockwise to read correctly
