1826 capped bust half dollar - fake?

    Someone local is offering this for sale. Any suggestions for telling if it is real or fake? I will check to make sure there is writing on the edge and that the weight is correct.

    Welcome, Brian ! :high5: I hope you enjoy the board.

    It's always hard to tell from scans. I don't think the coin is fake, but it has serious problems. The region behind the head appears to be a poorly done repair. Surfaces in general look beat. Though it has good details (maybe 35), it's had a tough life.

    Unless you want to fill a hole for cheap, I would pass. Personally, I wouldn't give more than VF20 money for this one.

    There are some positives. It's a middle die state with a balanced strike.

    yikes... I wouldn't pay VF money for that coin... maybe good money... I also think it's real... but real messed up.

    I rims/edges look like they have been beat on. Don't know, if you need it get it but work him on price. Don;t feel too bad if it gets away from you either.
