Trying to learn what varieties these are. I notice that these are both different ones because one has a smaller date. Thank you!
I’m not a variety collector but they both look the same size to me. I think the difference you are seeing is caused by the color and grade of the coin. The Red Book lists large and small dates but nothing is there for this date.
The reverses are different too. Note the relation of the leaves to the S in the legend. If I have time tomorrow, I'll try to attribute them,
The first (leftmost) coin is N-6. It's the only die marriage of 1825 where Star 6 points strongly right of the coronet tip. The second coin looks more like N-8 to me than N-9, primarily because the OP coin's reverse has a plainly evident center dot typical of N-8 and the reverse of N-9 is listed by Wright as "Tiny or missing center dot." I'm no expert on this series and I'm only matching things up to the examples listed in John Wright's book, so don't take my thinking as any kind of gospel.
Barry, Publius -- You guys are just too good and too fast. I wanted to do this one, but y'all got to it before I even saw the post. N6 and N8 are correct, both decent-looking coins. Here are images of those two varieties.
Typical JW eye candy. I remember being at a EAC meeting at FUN a few years ago and no one had a presentation ready so up pops John with a thumb drive and several hundred photos of eye-popping and unusual large cents that he could talk about off-the-cuff! Oh, and I could only attribute the OP's coins by having John's book open in front of me. Thanks for a great work and the dedication required to produce it.
