I have been looking for a Half cent for quite a while. This one jumped out at me. And, I really couldn't pass it up. The dealer had it marked as a C2 die state 3. I don't own any books on this series, I know I should get one.
I have looked at examples of Cohen 1 and 2 variety's. But still not sure how to Identify the 5 placement. Any thoughts on grade would be a plus.
Thanks IMG_2830.JPG IMG_2829.JPG The first Photos are of the in hand look.
The second are a little more of the lustre that is still there. IMG_2834.JPG IMG_2833.JPG

I had a thing for these once. I wanted to do a short set of 1832-1835 with the 1837 feuchtwanger. But I only managed to obtain the 1832 and 1835 before losing interest. I graded mine at around the XF-40 to 45 range, and yours looks similar to mine. As far as the date, The C-1 appears to have the 5 placed a bit higher than the C-2. I think yours is a C-2.

I now were two of those feuchtwangers are. The guy is a bit pricey on them.

Looks like a C2, State III. The faint crack from the twelfth star to the rim is the most noticeable characteristic. Nice looking piece.

Most are. I figured I would go after one again someday.

This has a lot of lustre still left. Plenty more than the pics provided.
I am leery of giving this an acetone bath. Dose anyone feel this would be a good or bad Idea?

If it has nice luster now and there is nothing to clean, I'd say leave it be. If you do anything, use verdicare, but I don't see the need for that either.

Btw, Breen has C2, State III as "very rare". In his scale, this would be a R-6, 13-30 pieces known.

    I agree that it's a C-2. Below is a picture of a C-1 (pardon the poor quality).

Note the relation between the 5 and the indentation in Liberty's hair directly above the 5. The 5 is more to the left of that indentation for the C-1 and more to the right of the indentation for the C-2. And I think yours in an XF45. Nice coin!

I'm at EF details, cleaned/dipped. The color does not look right. That "luster" you refer to looks to me like the uneven retoning of a dipped coin.

Red/orange on a copper coin is not necessarily luster.

The OP's coin looks cleaned to me.
The areas around the stars. And the high points on the obv. and rev. which should show a little wear, are shiny.

It was the second time I met the store owner.
He pointed out the reason why, he thought it was a Die state three.
In the same way ya'll have.
Thank you, looks like I need to find a C1,
Where on your Half Cent is the rim Bump?
I read that it was another way to identify the C1.

State four has a similar faint crack extending from star two to the rim. I don't see it in your images, but worth checking. This is the identifier that I used to call it state three. IMG_1928.PNG

With the op's permission, I'd like to post a photo here of a '25 I have had for a great while just never attributed it.

I'm actually not sure. And to be honest I don't even know what I'm looking for! I've looked at pictures of 1825 C-1's but I've never been able to figure out what the rim bump looks like.

The C-1 also apparently can come with rotated dies; mine is almost perfectly 180° rotated.
