I know this is a long shot, but does anyone know anything about these early slave tags? This one looks very original and has nice patina. It is maybe 2 inches tall. It says "Concordia Plantation, overseer straw boss, 1822 Louisiana," on the front it says ""permission to be off plantation with team and wagon at any hour," It also has the number 44 on the reverse. Any thoughts would help, authenticity, condition, value?

    Thanks

Well there is a Concordia parish in Louisiana. There are many old plantations in the parish on the national historical register. You may want to check there.

I know yours is rather neat and that I have wanted to buy one for quite some time and a La one makes it even nicer.
    Great find.

I never owned a slave tag turnerj1 but have seen pictures of many as well as a few in hand. I've never seen one like yours but that doesn't mean it's not authentic. There are a lot of fakes and reproductions out there so you need to talk to an expert. Most of these are valuable so you have to be careful. I know Steve Hayden handles these at times in his auctions. I don't recall his website address but if you Google his name it will come up. He also sets up at all major coin shows. Other good sources for info would be Stacks/Bowers and Heritage auction sites. Good luck and let us know you make out.
