More interested in opinions as to grade than value...but any opinions are welcome. The coin weighs 13.48 grams, and diagnostics compare favorably to Overton 101, though because it's lightly struck, the vertical portion of the 1 is faint, and under a loupe you have to turn the coin just right to see it. Is there a mint out there making these things? http://www.cointalk.com/t76635/. That makes 3 of them tonight.
I hope not....but nothing would surprise me today with all of what's been going on in China. Nightowl
I would say high AU to low MS details - looks cleaned on the obverse with all the little tick marks. And yes I agree it is O-101.
Dang...you beat me to it. I agree the obverse appears cleaned. The 12th star appears a bit odd, but I don't see anything else that would make me think it's not original.
Not sure what tick marks you see, but the cross hatch marks you see are raised...not incuse. I have seen the same die polishing marks on later coins....specifically a 1917 Walker that I had that was very high grade. Mint luster is still present on the neck and cheek...and here's what the coin looks like without incandescent lighting to emphasize the mint luster. It's a very even steel grey color. Nightowl
In the first picture, there appeared to be verticle striations in the left field. The second picture is better...even the 12th star looks normal (points to space between denticles).
Those are raised die polishing marks. I'm not saying that the coin may not have been cleaned, but it's not been abraded. It may have been dipped at some point though. Nightowl
It doesn't appear cleaned to me in the second pics, looks MS to me also. As far as being authentic or not, I could not say. Nice coin John
I do not believe the OP's coin is authentic. It just doesn't look right - The odd weaknesses in the letters (particularly in AMERICA) and the oddly shaped 5 raise red flags. If it is genuine, I don't like the blast white, polished, harshly cleaned look of it and would pass on this coin.
Took a look at some more of these 22/1s....and the 5 looks just like this one to me. Notice the missing portion of the "s" in Pluribus....is also present on that coin, and the weakness of the letters is more prevalent in STATES, with the A being VERY weak. Nightowl
