Any ideas if this is Copper or Brass?

Also, is it better to leave it as-is in its uncleaned corroded conditon?

What do you think of the value in its current state?

    1) leave it alone!
Do not clean, unless you send it to NCS for 'curating'.

in good condition red book lists at $800.

Also, listed as copper or brass, so must be same value.

When doing some research online, it appears that the brass is 10x more common than the copper. I also found that there are only 7 known copper versions in existance today. I was just wondering if I may have found number 8?

I did find a few auctions where these have sold. They all appear to have been cleaned at one time or another. The auctions I've found range from a brass for $3,700+ to a copper for $11,500. Most of these were sold by Heritage Auction Galleries.

Anyway, I guess not a bad find. This past weekend, I was looking through some glassware that i inherited from my late grandmother and found this coin/token in a glass.

According to Early American Tokens (Rulau 1988) there are two varieties - Copper and Brass. Under Brass the description reads "Laureate bust of George IV right, TOKEN / 1820. Rv: Beaver right, NORTH WEST above, COMPANY below. Plain edge."

    Also:

    Listed values (1988) are:

    Brass - VG $225, F $375
    Copper - VG $250, F $425

I disagree, a cleaning would vastly improve this coin. That being said, unless Twinton has experience in cleaning this type of corrosion/encrustation, its best that he either leaves it be or sends it to NCS.

NCS would be a great option for this coin, I think, after doing a lot of research on their services.

And tht is why I mentioned NCS for 'curating' (which is an expensive word for : "cleaning").

So, does anybody have an opinion if this is most likely brass or copper?

Or is it too hard to determine in its current state?

    It appears to be copper.
