Can anyone recommend any further reading about the 1817 or 1818 New Spain Jola? I've googled and came up with a few articles. I would really love to find out more about these coins, especially who was responsible for the discovery of the cache in 1959. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've got the minters covered but I would love to know more about the history of the discovery, which I cannot seem to find any information on. Are there any books in regards to these elusive coins?

Not much info on this coin. The information I was told about 8 months ago on this coin I have all but forgotten. This is one of my favorite primitive Southwest U.S. coins ever produced that circulated.

Sorry I can't help you out.

Tom Maringer (sp?) might know something further about the coin. He likes to read and study the history of old legendary coins... :)

Please take a look at my post...I have mentioned that I have googled the Texas Jola and I am unable to find what I am looking for via that avenue. I was hoping that someone could point me towards another source rather than the internet.

But I have no idea "what" you came up with when you looked on Google - that's why I posted what I did. But to answer your question - if you had read the links I porvided you would have found this -

Freidus, Dan. ""Almost Unnoticed": 1818 Texas Jola, Little-Known Spanish
Colonial," Coin World (December 24, 2001), pp. 62.

That is the single best source for info I know of on that particular coin.

New Spain Texas Jola 1818 1/2RL

I read an article in a book on Tokens at Books A Million last week. Don't have the particulars but will post again next time I visit the book store. What I remember is the book on tokens listed about 100 tokens with some history. On the Texas jola it was item 96 in the book. A Father and his two sons were looking over a new construction site where a golf course was being constructed in San Antonio. One of the sons found a Texas Jola coin and because of the 1818 date the Father had them look for more coins over a period of time they found 59 or so and this was in 1959. The Father was said to have been a part time coin dealer If my memory serves me right. His name was szots or svots I'll let you know more on my next visit. There is only 100 known to exist from a possible 8000 that was comissioned to be struck by San Antonio Post Master Jose Antonio de la Garza. Know one knows how many was made. They were struck using a large planchet and a small planchet. I have a small planchet coin that was found here in North Carolina and will be offered for sell soon. I know of five other Texas Jola's that have sold. Check out HA.com and search for New Spain Texas Jola that may prove to be very interesting to you. One coin sold for $80,000:headbang:
