I think you're right on. A bit more wear, but nice relatively uncleaned surfaces that I think will be rewarded.
Agreed. I wouldn't argue with 40 on a good day, but I don't see 45 here. Liberty's hair curls are too flat. Granted, a lot of that is due to the strike, but there's definite wear there. On the other hand, the clasp of her gown is so indistinct, there's definitely some strike weakness going on, so ...?
Yeah I've been comparing to a PCGS 40 I have. The eagle on the OPs coin has more detail than mine. A lot of it probably comes down to remaining luster, I'm thinking 40 now over my earlier guess.
There is actually quite a bit of luster on this coin. I always grade early bust halves by looking at the right wing and the luster.
I go by hair curls on the obverse and feathers on the reverse, but due to the discrepancy in striking (the reverse so often better struck than the obverse, as seen here), my methodology admittedly has its shortcomings.
You can't grade these based on anything other than luster and strike. The way they were struck... each individual date and each die pairing within those dates have a different look. You have to really be an expert in the series to grade them properly or at least, consistently.
