Team, I was hoping another set (or several sets) of eyes could take a look at this half. I think it attributes at a O-105, but there are some 105A aspects as well. Help... Throw your grade on it as well if you want to. I would like to hear what you think. Thanks for looking Ben
Awesome! That one sure is nice. Not good at grading Busts, but my guess would be fine- very fine. Very nice coin. Phoenix
Excuse my ignorance, don't know much about busts, but are those diecracks around the date? They look raised to me. I know hardly anything about busts, so I don't know if those kind of things are common. What does O-105 mean? Phoenix
Phoenix, thanks for the kind words. Yes, the marks around the date are die-cracks and clash marks. The O-105 is simply a designation for a certain (Overton Variety, 101-110 for the 1812), it means really nothing to those who don't follow the series and affects the price in negligible ways. An 1812, O-105 in VF condition is worth about the same as an 1812, O-107, etc. There are different Rarity Ratings (R1-R8, 8 being the rarest) which also correspond to each number. All in all there are around 460 varieties of Capped Bust Half Dollars 1807-1836. Take care Ben
Wow. Thanks for explaining for me. What is the grade? It look like a very nice bust. Are you trying to collect all the varieties? Sorry if this is a dumb question. Thanks again for explaining, and you take care yourself. Phoenix
I think (Minus the M of course) it'll grade a VF-35 grade. "Collect all the varieties..." LOL, well I'm afraid I was bitten by the bug and will try to collect as many as I can afford as time goes by. Take Care Ben
Nice. Good luck on collecting them all. That's a lot to collect. What does the M mean? It's not supposed to be there? Sorry, I know hardly anything about them, except the stuff you explained. The hardest part of collecting is having enough money lol. Except, I don't think a coin collector would have enough money to satisfy his collection lol. Take care, and best of luck. Phoenix
Bone, I would net that as a vf-35. I believe it is a 105a since the die cracks are very strong. On the 105 I believe they are weak. Also there is clearly a die crack extending out of the 2 that shoots straight up at roughly 60 degrees to the left that connects with the first die crack. This would indicate the 5-s2 obverse. There also appears to be a fine die crack that extends from the center of the tips of leaves to united which should be the reverse that matches the 105-a.
Thanks Big Z for taking a look. The picture really shows the cracks better than on the coin in hand, go figure Ben
Darn bugs Thats a 'very fine' coin Ben. I really enjoy looking at your bust halves, and I am always amazed by the knowledge bust collectors need and have on all the varieties. Your coins always have enough detail left to really let the great design through.:thumb: You've really got to watch those darn bugs too, they can prove to be expensive. The worst part about those collecting bugs is that they seam to be able to travel through computers to infect others!! nice coin, I can't wait to see the next.
, Thanks for the compliment on the coin, the different varieties are well described and documented in either reference source, either "Bust Half Fever" or "...Early Half Dollar Die varieties..." Yes, Bugs are indeed infectious... Take Care Ben
Ben: Very nice, and I agree with the O-105a. The die cracks are there, and more defined than on the O-105.
Phoenix: The "M" is a letter scratched into the coin, probably a hundred & fifty years ago. Many of these have initials scratched into them. There was a hoard located upstate NY a few years ago that all had an initial scratched into the obv top. The owner did it so that if he ever saw them being used in town he would know that someone had gotten into his hoard.
Another beautiful coin Bone!! Thats for invoking the attribute lesson for these coins. I've seen your collection from a link in another post and it is very extensive, at least for me it is. I would love to have a few examples one day myself. This coin looked better then VF to me, but I know s--- about them. It does look cleaned and I did notice the M, which I could live with if it were mine. Interesting factoid about the M though. Thanks for sharing.
Oh, internet stores at times. You must be quick though, because there are sharks and new listing can go fast... Take Care Friend Ben
