No, a die clash is when the obverse die hits the reverse die because there is no coin planchet in the press. With the coin you have, the edge design was added in a separate process. Not really sure what it would be called.
hello out there,i have an 1812 half, with what i believe to be a minting error,on the lettered edge the r from dollar is overshadowed by the f in fifty cents.can someone please tell me if at all this increases my coin's value
Greetings, It might depending on which variety it is, but I doubt it because the edges were always messed up. The 1812 has 10 known different varieties and some are rarer than others. Can you post a picture? Take Care Ben
j: The bust half dollars had the lettered edge added in a separate step, much like the process that is done today, with the Washington dollars. There are many varieties to the lettering, but the one that you mention is not considered to be a valuable one.
Yeah...there are so many messed up edge varieties on these early american coins that most of them are not worth too much more than the normal coin.
