1810 Bust Half Dollar, Wicked Die Crack, O-103

    Wow, the combination of a super weak strike leaving hardly any hair details and a very strong semi-circular die crack is really nice.

    Whoa, was that die used long enough after the crack for a cud to develop?

    No, there are no known CUDS in the series. They were all struck w/o the use of a collar. If (and when) the die failed terminally the final coin would have been simply tossed into the melting pot and a new OBV. die would have been grabbed.

    I think this is a good example of the "orange peel" effect.
    Caused by using the dies too long.
    If it is, keep the images handy.
    Textbook case.

    An interesting observation I made earlier today is the coin is a little OBLONG! When measured from left edge to right the diameter is 32.5mm and when measured from top to bottom the diameter is 33.25mm. it makes sense when you take the die crack into consideration.
