Howdy fellow coin peeps, :thumb: I noticed a 1809 Classic Head Half-Cent for sale on Ebay that looks like it's had a chin tuck? It may just be a mark that inadvertently follows the contour of the chin outline but I don't know and that's why I'm posting it on here to see what the experts have to say. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250257148012&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=015 Ribbit
That coin shows either a very strong "die bounce" (effectively Machine Doubling.) or it has been double struck, possibly just on one side (Coin stays firly in reverse die but is struck a second time with an obverse die that is loose and rtates between strikes.).
Condor: I agree with the strike doubling idea. If it had been double struck, there would be some trace of doubling in the stars.
True but the pictures are bad. There could be traces but they aren't visible. You would have to see better pictures or the coin in hand. I agree though that it is more likely to be a "die bounce".
When I saw this coin and the weird double profile, I examined every bit of the coin for any other signs of restriking and couldn't find any or I would have probably bought it. I'd never seen this before so that's why I posted it here to see if you could make sense of it. Even though I didn't buy it, I still like the coin. :thumb: Ribbit
