    Howdy peeps, :)

    I ran across this CBH:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150368339062

I checked the Overton book and could not find one like it, so is it a new variety or a counterfeit?

What set me off is the position of the C in 50C and the arrow under the eagle's left wing. The C is under the branch tip, which no known 1807's have a C in that position, and the arrow goes way under the last A in AMERICA, which also doesn't jive with any known 1807's, so I figure it's a counterfeit and the host coin, used to make the dies, was a different year and the diagnostics will match up to that year, which will prove it's a counterfeit but I can't figure out what the host coin year/variety is. :goofer:

Anyone want to give it a shot?

It's counterfeit - the easiest way to tell is that it's the wrong design type for that date. The sale has ended, but I still encourage others to report it to Ebay as I just did.

    Here's a genuine one from Coinfacts.com:

Mark, what got me with the OP coin is the doubled profile. That's the first counterfeit I've seen with a doubled profile and at first, I thought it was authentic but when I went to attribute it, that's when the cookie crumbled. ;)

On the example you showed, the C of 50C is much further to the right and more space between the 50 & C than the OP coin and all 1807's are similar and that was the first thing I noticed and the arrow was the next and I stopped looking after that. I didn't feel there was any need to out it anymore. ;)

I messaged the seller about it yesterday and they replied about and hour ago, that it sold and never answered my question. I'll message the seller now and inform them it's a coiunterfeit, since it isn't possible to be authentic, unless it is a new variety but I doubt it. ;)

It's interesting to me how different people look at/focus on/notice different things. As soon as I saw the obverse (with the wrong portrait) I knew the coin was counterfeit. And your suspicions were aroused when you saw the "50 cand C" on the reverse, which I might not have paid attention to.

I can't see the difference on the obverse (I've never been able to catch that) but with the apparent recutting of 50C, I figure the host coin is a much later date that had 50 CENTS or HALF DOLLAR and they recut it so it would be correct, although not in the correct location.

This was clearly made to fool the collector, although they didn't get everything correct. ;)

Notice the size of the bust on the obv. On the reverse where do I start. The banner is not in the right position, the I to T relationship isnt right, the 50C is off, The dentils are sporadic, the list goes on. A very poor Fake.

Most collectors are novices and it would fool them, just as it initially fooled me. ;)

Ahh, but you educated yourself and caught it before it got you. THAT my toad friend is the key. There are TONS of fake BHD's out there. I have seem them at almost every show that I have attended for a while now and generally I very quietly tell the dealer what I see. Then they get mad and accuse me of trying to buy it on the cheap. I have NEVER made an offer on one and won't. I am not a professional dealer, or BHD expert but I do have a few of them laying around.

You are totally correct, Jim! But I was also lucky I had the Overton book to use to out it or I wouldn't have known any better, but there was something about the look that also bothered me. I usually won't bid on anything if something about it bothers me. ;)

Ps: I got the Overton Book as a gift for someone else, I just haven't had the time to send it to them but I've used it a couple of times since I got it. :D

Pps: Here's a DBD that bothers me a lot:

Something about the way it looks doesn't look right to me and I've spent a lot of time studying it and can't pinpoint anything wrong with it. :goofer: What do you think about it? :kewl:

Toad: if you don't have the Overton guide handy, I highly recommend the website www.coinzip.com They have a date-by-date and Overton-by-Overton in depth pictorial reference, and numerous highly knowledgeable and specialized collectors.
