So this variety has a horrible issue with lacking a complete strike - all b-4 lack detail on the back and what looks like a chip on the obv near the top and horrible hair....only a few examples in pcgs image searches.... Given that I am curious what folks would grade it at... Thanks!!!
I love this series. VF20 all day. But the halo look around the obverse letters and devices may indicate "cleaned."
https://www.pcgs.com/books/quarterdollars/QuarterDollarsOf1806-002.aspx Looks like late die state with all the breaks... Appears to be r-4 but could that be higher in later die states??
Ok so potentially being cleaned hurts it but still retains a pretty large value...whew.... So in trying to learn here, how could I figure out what the premium or relative rarity would be for the variation? Not that I am looking to sell it, just trying to figure out what it truly is - in the link above from the pcgs library it says the coin variety is an r-4. But the die state discussion says at the end of the die state III description "extremely rare" does that mean this detailed of a variation is higher than the r-4? Thanks!!
I'd call "R-4" a pretty serious rarity underestimate for a coin which is unknown in Mint State and PCGS only records five in slabs at any grade. Even rarer in the late die state yours shows. Auction prices are rather astounding in view of this - a PCGS Genuine (Graffiti, a couple henscratches on the obverse) only sold for $705 earlier this year. This auction is not listed at PCGS CoinFacts, and revises my estimate of value somewhat.
ok so i have closer up scans - does this look like a shattered die or did someone try to repair this coin? Almost like this was one of the last coins with this die as it appears to have just about come apart on the top of the obv and the bottom of the rev...I cannot find one with a late a die stage as this... Thanks!!
You can kind of see something coming apart on this on the top of this one http://www.richuhrichcoins.com/img/coins/combined/641.jpg Which is graded pcgs 8
