I've been wanting to get a half cent above VF for a while now, and I finally had my eye on one. I almost jumped out of my seat when I first layed eyes on this one. Of course my dream coin is a 1795 Flowing Hair Half F-15, but nice half cents were next on my list. I had been wanting an 1804 spiked chin, but this was next on my list. So the guy had it priced at $ 1200. I offered him 1k, but he wouldn't budge. He ended up being quite the fan of Bust Halves, and we negotiated a trade for 750 plus one of my 1834 Large Letter Halves AU-53 (It was the one I had the thread on with the black eyeball). So I don't think I got hosed and I don't think I got a huge discount or anything, but I feel like I hit a homerun. Please take a look and give me your honest opinions on the coin. Thank you all.
Very nice color and luster and originality, IMO. Looks like a solid 58 to my eye. One shortcoming of the coin is the spots -- they are viewed as a negative by most collectors of copper in this (and most) grades. Thanks for sharing....Mike
Nice die rotation...... Good looker too. We'uns po folks gots to put up with the spots sometimes....... Nice pick 'em up Jason.
I have no issue with spots in and of themselves, for what it's worth. Here's the (spotted) half cent from my typeset: I was simply referencing the broader view of the market, and it was not intended to be a slight to the coin or its owner, and hope it was not taken that way. I like the 1806.
Mike, I know you weren't doing that. Just couldn't resist an invitation to be devilish......... That's a marvelous piece you've displayed.
Not much of a fan of the coppers, actually ended giving my only 1837 large cent to a friend, but VERY NICE!:thumb: I enjoy seeing that little piece of history in such great shape though. With no expertise, my (un)professional opinion would say AU55 due to the spots, but I can't argue with PCGS. Great find though, I can't tell you if you got a good score with the trade either because I don't know much about anything before 1880. oh, and nice die rotation! ~Cannyn
I like your coin, and I am not overtly bothered by the stains on the reverse. I tolerate stains (as opposed to spots) more on copper than on silver coins, for example. Having said that I would not have paid $ 1200 for it. I would like it for $900-1050. This is the approximate range similar coins seem to go for go in Heritage.
Thanks, I don't take offense at all with honest criticism. I definitely had to take the spots/stains into account, but they really didn't bother me that much. The different shading in the face and in the hair, made the obverse really jump out at me. The hair, and die rotation is what sold me. The Half I had for sale at $295, so along with the 750, I probably paid/traded ($1,000-1,025) after would be fees. Lead I really enjoyed looking at your half. Stunning.
Very nice coin. As others said, the spot are distracting to some, but personally they don't bother me. Very nice example of what I consider one of the US' prettiest coins designs. One of the first things I did when I started buying US coins seriously was buy a complete type set of this design. I have to admit, though, I didn't have to pay $1000 for any of them, (to be fair the dollar was only VF though). Chris
One would love an unspotted example, but you would also be expected to pay more. I like the coin, very nice. When you are buying for your own, rather than to flip, the price is less of a consideration Jim
I have no knowledge about early copper, except for my 1804. But what I do know, is that a fantastic looking coin. The color is great and the spots don't bother me at all. They make it look more genuine and original to me. Excellent pickup! Can't comment on the price/trade, but if you are happy it must have been fine.
