I believe it is: 1806 Sm. 6 Stemless Am I correct? Also, what is a fair price for this coin? I realize it's damaged and has seen better days. But I gotta think there is some value still there. Thanks for any help.
It appears to be the medium 6 w/stems. The stems are the sticks protruding out from the bottom of the wreath. I'll concede to a real copper guru for price and attribution.
Greg, In looking at the pics in "American Half Cents" by Roger S. Cohen Jr., the first 0 of the date and the visible upper portion of the 2nd 0 on the obverse and, the spacing of AMERICA letters on the reverse, the position of the long stems both left, pointing to the U, and right, pointing below the A lead me to think it is an 1800. I cannot find the stem positions and the spaces letters of AMERICA on any other date. There were only 1 pair of dies used in 1800, thus it is classified as C-1 for that date, and rarity is 1. The old eyes might be seeing things that arn't there so lets hear from others.
I hope you are right PG! I'll snap some better images and see if I can't see that date better. If it is an 1806, I thought there were either SM or LG 6. Are you messing with me kookoox?
Whoops, you're correct Greg, I confused myself with the 1805 which has a small, medium and large 5. In any event, I don't think you have the large 6 if in fact it is an 1806. I have an example of the large 6, and the top tail of the 6 would actually touch into the design of the bust. Pennyguy made a compelling argument with the die pairings to come up with the 1800. -Shaun
Greg, Here is a link to an excellent pic of an 1806 Half Cent. Note the size of the reverse stems and their position. Also the spacing of the letters in AMERICA. http://www.ngccoin.com/NGCCoinExplorer/CoinDetail.aspx?CoinID=11093 And here is a link to an 1800. Look for the same reverse markers, keep in mind that there was only one die pair in 1800. http://www.ngccoin.com/NGCCoinExplorer/CoinDetail.aspx?CoinID=11051
Nice job Penny Guy! I am glad I asked. Once you pointed out the reverse characteristics, it became glaring obvious. Mine being the one in the middle obviously. So now, I still would like to know what value it has. I have no idea how to price it.
For sure. I feel like an idiot. Not to mention, I bought a beautiful (and massive) half cent book from pennyGuy. I probably should have cracked it open before I came here. lol
LOL Don't feel bad guys, the eye plays tricks on us when we think we see something on these old coppers. I went year by year looking only at reverse pics to find the matching die. Nothing fancy, just page by page. As far as value, I would take a wild guess on a retail value of about $50. Greg... Big coin show at the Livonia Holiday Inn, I-275 and 6 Mile on Thur thru Sat.
