Recently purchased from a stamp auction that had " other " section in it with a couple of coins here in Australia.
I paid $350 for it and was pretty sure it wasnt much... Didnt expect it to be for sale, i didnt even look at it until i heard it being auctioned so i gambled
They called it Very fine? Here in Australia we dont really use the US grading system so if you could help me out with your experiences with US coins that would be great!
Also which company would be a good idea to send it to for grading?

    Thanks! 2202a.jpg 2202b (1).jpg

Sweet coin, I would call it a 15 net 12 for the nicks, I don't have my price guide with me but I will check tonight. Very nice surfaces.

Edit: Pointing out my grade is based on EAC grading of the coin. I agree that a TPG would grade it much higher, but with that many nicks on the throat and the rim ding on the reverse I feel it would have a slight deduction.

Update, I looked through some auction catalogs and I am going to upgrade what I thought, to maybe a 25 or 30 sharpness with either a 5 point deduction or none, I would call it a above average 25.

First of all nice coin, 12 is a lot low for the coin. I'm shooting somewhere in the VF35-XF40 range no problem. Keep in mind a coin this old is bound to have nicks, and usually a TPG won't dock points for light contact wear. And it's a nice "small 5" variety as well. In my estimation you paid fair market for that coin, I don't think you got a screaming deal.

Unless there are color or cleaning problems that I can not judge from the photo I think this is an easy 30 or 35 coin Maybe a net 30 for the typical weakness in the lower potion of the wreath.

And unfortunately it is NOT one of the small 5 varieties This is the medium 5 stemless C-1 die state III. It is an R-1 variety

I think it will be detail graded as it appears cleaned to me. Could still make the VF as it has no real distractions to to my eye. The halo effect around the devices make me think cleaned.

Nice half cent. I believe this is possibly XF-40.

Now that I look more closely at it, it does seem to be cleaned. Not a chocolaty brown that it should be.

thanks guys! Now to get it slabbed! Pcgs or NGC for this one? Which one has better reputation with dealing with these sort of coins?

To me - it is PCGS, but both are good. As it stands I put it an XF details no matter which you use, but would not be surprised with VF details(upper end). Just my opinion.

Keep us in the loop when you get your coin back, I think we're all just a little anxious to know what it grades.

I have difficulty with uneven wear. The Hair looks VF 20 and the Bust Drapery looks XF45/AU50. Dings would definitely get a deduction if XF but not necessarily if VF. TPGs would be probably be high end these days. EACers probably middle.

Good luck and nice find. I don't think you will be dissappointed with this purchase.
