My 1804 Liberty. I do not want to put it in the mail to have graded in case it is real. Any help would be appreciated to let me know if there is a possibility it is real and worth traveling to a grading service. Thanks
Looks like a fake, the date looks a little weird. Besides, I doubt its real in the first place. You'd have alot of money sitting right there if it was, but I vote counterfeit.
Thanks for the input... Yes, I know near nothing about coin authenticity but I have been holding onto this my whole life as I have always been told what it could possibly be worth. Any and all opinions are greatly appreciated.
I'm inclined to say it's a fake. Mostly due to the color. It just doesn't look silver and the rim doesn't look right either. Have you weighed it?
Yes I had a local coin dealer weigh it and it weighed the correct amount. He still thought it was counterfeit, however. I thought the same thing about the color until I did some research and discovered that the King of Siam specimen looks to have a similar color... and mine has never been cleaned. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1804_Silver_Dollar_-_Class_I_-_King_of_Siam_Specimen.jpg I am aware it is most likely counterfeit but can't hurt to follow up on it.
Counterfeit. Color has nothing to do with it. Shallow strike and the weird date font is a dead giveaway. Most of the details literally melt into the surface of the coin.
Save your money. Your coin is a counterfeit. Zero percent chance it is genuine. It is counterfeit and a poor one at that. Very weak details. The date is wrong. Perhaps the biggest clue is . . . your coin has a reeded edge. There are three classes of 1804 Silver Dollars: Class I - Lettered Edge Class II - Smooth Edge (only one known) Class III - Lettered Edge
another hint: 1) the date position 2) color 3) the reverse 'die crack' 4) the fact that it ain't real.
Real ones do have a die crack on the reverse. It's nowhere near as prominent and not in that location, but it's there. The giveaway for me (besides the edge and the fact that it ain't real ) is the contrast between the 4 in the date and the other three numbers. The 4 is much more prominent than the other three digits. I've seen lots of bad fakes where the altered digit will stand out like this.
