hey guys i was looking for opinions on this 1804 large cent. as long as the price doesnt get outta sight i might want this as my bday present but since i know these are quite rare looking for some opinions before i say this is what i want since ive equally wanted to get my first liberty cap cent. these are his pics and his description below. Another true auction with a 1c opening bid and no reserve; name your price! Great early date, low mintage. Sheldon 266 die state B, the rarest of the die states for the variety. The real deal; zero in date lines up exactly with O in OF, strong cud at RTY, reverse shows strong cracks connecting tops of MER with light cracks joining RIC. Obverse a bit rough but with much detail still showing and a nice solid LIBERTY, reverse particularly strong. This gem, minted back when Thomas Jefferson was president, would make a fantastic addition to any early copper collection. Uncertified, please view images and bid accordingly. I have other items up for auction as well so take a look; consolidate multiple wins and save.
the obverse of the coin is good, but the reverse is really good considering the age, nice coin though, what is the price going for?
well id want to know if this would at least come up genuine if submitted to a grader. its not in the best of condition but i like its rugged look with some detail.
close but no cigar I think it's fake. The obverse looks OK, but the reverse of an authentic 1804 should show a prominent die cud from the M to the C of AMERICA. Look at page 98 of the 2010 Redbook. While the restrike doesn't have that reverse cud, it does have a prominent die break on the obverse. Any EAC members out there who can be more definitive?
Sure, I'll try... Not all 1804s have the prominent reverse cud mentioned above. In fact, the obverse cud rim break on RTY appears earlier (die state III) than the reverse cud (die state IV). There are some specimens with no die breaks (perfect Die state 1). IOW... the absence of the reverse cud in no way condemns this coin as fake. The traditional test is die alignment - all 1804s are aligned such that the "0" in the date lines up with the "O" in "OF". This is of no help unless one has the coin in hand; if the seller offers a return privilege, you have a chance. If he doesn't, forget it. Personally, I think this coin appears genuine. I would call it VG 8 details, heavy corrosion, net 3, die state III. CQR $750 in avg-. Die state III is a rarer die state. There is only one die marriage for 1804.
I strongly recommend purchasing Breen's "Encyclopedia of Early US Cents 1793 - 1814" before getting involved with coins like this. I urge the greatest caution purchasing such a coin on E-Bay. Personally, I wouldn't do it - although the coin appears to be genuine, electrotype copies abound. I strongly recommend purchasing certified coins or raw coins from top dealers whom you know.
The seller states "Sheldon 266 die state B, the rarest of the die states for the variety."; that is true. It is R.5 according to CQR. He also mentions "strong cracks connecting tops of MER with light cracks joining RIC"; that is also true and is why they zoom in on that portion of the coin. Important detail. In general, the seller's notes sound like someone who knows what they're talking about.
ty for the inputs. ive been to some local book stores used & new even coin shops and havent found any breen books. it is sort of why i was asking for opinions because i wanted something special to go in my collection and my bday is relatively soon. i know pictures dont do a coin like this justice compared to handling it but i wont be able to do that either if i dont win so ill just have to see how high it goes (because my limit is set not far from what it already costs).
better minds than mine Lugia, In light of the above comments, I withdraw my concerns, subject to an actual inspection of the coin. Let us know if you decide to bid and the results.
The seller also says "This gem, minted back when...." and calling this junk box special a gem is pure bullcruddy.
900Fine and CappebustDimes have already stated that in their opinions, this coin is genuine. I agree with this. Furthermore, The seller is one of a handful of Ebay sellers who focus on copper coins, and this is another 'comfort' factor. I've bought from this seller before and I was on the whole satisfied (a low grade 1796 draped bust cent), except for the unduly high PayPal fees which he made me pay, which were excessive in my opinion.
he actually is not allowed to pass on paypal fees as an extra charge only the shipping charge and the final bid price.. I would make a complaint to paypal about it...
Just calling this coin a junk box special is the joke. As to the OP I have seen these auctions before by this seller - so far they have not had anything I would bid on to put up with all of his crap in the "terms and conditions", plus restocking fees. Of course if you get it cheap enough - who cares. Good luck!
yea "restocking fees" is a first ive seen on ebay. MBT im sorry all of us dont have a couple of thousand to throw around when a special coin comes up so my set may never be the best looking to everyone else but i wouldnt bother bidding on coins i didnt like.
