My 83 year old Grandmother gave me a coin this past Memorial Day weekend that her Father had given to her. I am not a coin collector and basically I know absolutely nothing about coins. But curiousity got the better of me and I decided to do a little research online about the coin. I am actually really surprised to read that the coin that my Grandmother has recently given to me is a 1804 Draped Bust Liberty Dollar. It seems as though this is a pretty rare coin. During my research about the coin I have learned that there are 3 classes of this coin. I believe this coin is a class 1 or class 3 coin. The class 2 coin had no writing on the edge of it. This one does. I have no idea how to examine this coins condition. To me, it looks brand new. It is a beautiful coin and has been kept in a plastic sleeve for many, many years. I am thinking that it could be possible that this coin was only handled be a handful of people because of it's excellent condition. So I would greatly appreciate any info. anyone has out there on this coin. I am really wanting to know if it is a class 1 or a class 3 coin. How can I tell? Anyone know?
It's almost certainly a fake of a coin that would be worth millions if genuine. Post a photo weigh it etc.
First off welcome Second off, HOLY CRAP Third, I am no bust expert, but somebody will be along to tell ya' whats up Pictures will help us determine your coin, and maybe if it is real If it is real, YOU HAVE GOT ONE RARE COIN ON YOUR HANDS... (Speaking of hands DO NOT TOUCH IT WITH YOUR BARE HANDS) And if this is real, send it into PCGS for grading
I don't believe it is fake. I am no expert but I have actually spent quite a bit of time looking at photos of the coin and reading about the coin. My Grandmothers Father was actually a coin collector and I think he knew full well what this coin was. I am trying to figure out how to post pics for you all to see.
Pictures are worth a thou... ...COULD be worth a million dollars/words. In other words we need to see some nice scans or digital photos!
I know! I feel pretty lucky. I just really want to hear more about it and what class it is. I am not touching it with bare hands! I know that much!!
Yep. Expected weight = 26.96 grams. Diameter = 39-40 mm The odds of this being real are even more remote than the Houston Astros winning the World Series. The most recent 1804 sale was $2.3 million (just last month).
Welcoem to CoinTalk! And I repeat T$ when I say this...HOLY CRAP!!! I hope your coin is real, but I wouldn't have you hopes up. Try to post pics when you can. I am telling you! I do believe it is real. I am not kidding. I can tell by looking at it and comparing it from other actual photos. Like I said, I am no expert but it looks exactly like the other real 1804's I have seen online. I know it is hard to believe. I am trying to figure out how to post photos on here so you all can see it.
Ok, well I will have to get a scale then. But doesnt it look real to you?? I will show you a pic of the edge to.
I think it's fake due to the way the "4" in 1804 looks. It's not a thin as the genuine examples. Here is a site I found with a genuine one: http://www.pacificrarities.com/History of the 1804 Original or Class I Dollar.htm Also for reference: http://www.money.org/AM/Images/LightboxImgLrg/1804DollarLrg.jpg
