IMO that coin looks like a fake...the die was marked with the line across the die (therefor the crack) and the other side of the die was marked too--it also has the look of a coin that was found in the ground...

It was found in the ground. I think its a fake also. That was my first thought.

Since it was found in the ground that might tell us why it looks like that...it might also me a real one...but something still tells me to keep on looking at it....

I wish it wasnt in such bad shape. Oh well. It is made of copper not lead or pewter. Thanks for the reply Speedy. :)

Weigh it. It should be 10.89 grams or a little less.

My guess is that the coin is genuine and has spent many, many years in the ground and a ground that was pretty corrosive! Since the Die Crack extended above the entire surface and details at striking, it will still be the most prevalent detail on the coin even with that much corrosive wear.

As for the weight, with that much corrosive wear, I am sure that it will weigh quite a bit less than the 10.89 grams which is normal for a Large Cent from the period!
