I was watching eBay and came across this one. I didn't go crazy as usual with a bid so it went to another, BUT... Does anyone else see what made it 'different' to me? this is the coin. The obverse looks like the S-244 unfinished style to me while paired with the Reverse C (Breen B) of the S-245. It happens.
Well it certainly looks like that - obverse 244 and reverse of 245. But on the 245 the L is low and that seems to match on the obverse. The problem I have is that I would like to see the coin straight on - maybe then the hair will look finished. From the angle of the picture I would agree, still I would like to see it straight on.
I know I was disappointed that I couldn't capture the image and "overexpose" it to see if there was detail in the shadow. I guess that's why I didn't raise my bid like I usually do. The thing about it is that it would confirm the fact that this was two different dies rather than a reworked or polished die as described by both Sheldon and Breen. A middle state S-244 Obverse cannot be paired with a middle state Reverse of S-245 without being two separate Obverse dies.
Yes - I tried a couple things with the pictures, but nothing would help me see more of the diagnostics. Darn shame you didn't win it.
Thanks! I don't see any more device detail, but there appears to be more corrosion and impact damage at all the significant points making me glad I didn't win it. It could simply be a coincidence that the all the identifying features have PMD on a coin with overall nice detail. A coin with nicer surfaces would really reduce the uncertainty. By the way, how did you manage to capture the image?
Well - I did it with going to the large pictures and just opening each individually in a new window. Then I could save them. What I could not do was see the connecting line between ib. The hair could be finished but I can't tell for sure.
OK, I'm using Firefox 4. Enlarge the image in ebay. Right click the image select "View page info" in the window that opens click on the media tab. The window changes to show an upper box that lists all the media on the page and a lower box that shows the enlarged image. From here you can do one of two things, click the "Save as" button above the lower box, or right click the "Location" URL below the upper box. I right clicked the URL, chose "select all" then Crtl+C to copy the URL. Then I just pasted that into the thread as an image. It sounds involved but it really isn't. Internet Explorer 8 is a little less involved: Enlarge the image in ebay right click the image Now you can either save the picture, or click on "Properties" In the window that comes up right click the "Address URl", select all, and Ctrl+C Now you are ready to paste it as an image in the thread. Those are the only two browsers I have so I don't know how to do it in others but it would probably be similar.
