Can someone explain the history or background on these? They are extremely beautiful, i'm interested in getting one but know nothing about it. I'd hate to make a stupid purchase... also what you think they are worth? What else is similar to it? How much of it is silver value and how much of it is collectible value? I prefer coins more heavily weighted towards their melt value but I don't think i'll get away with that on these..? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1887-Frankfurt-City-Medallic-Silver-Shooting-Thaler-aXF-/110853788027?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19cf66917b
You can view some of Zohar444's shooting medals here: http://www.cointalk.com/t190369/ Just do a search here at CT or on Google. I only have this one (more modern) piece.
I do have an older bronze shooting metal but don't know if I have a photo available. To answer your question these medals are widely collected. According to Wikipedia, shooting competitions are a way of life in the Germanic regions of Europe, especially in Switzerland. The initial Swiss Federal Shooting Festival (Eidgenössisches Schützenfest) was held in 1824. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schützenfest
This link describes Zohar444's collection at the collector society website: http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/WCM/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=1753 I can only show you this one example from my collection. As I recall I got it for a few dollars in a dealer's cheap box.
Hi, at the moment, I'm sitting about 50 meters away from the castle of Frauenfeld. It still looks like on the medal . I have the medal too. It's a nice piece and as a medal of the "Eidgenössischen Schützenfeste" something typical swiss. Regards
