Can someone explain the history or background on these? They are extremely beautiful, i'm interested in getting one but know nothing about it. I'd hate to make a stupid purchase... also what you think they are worth? What else is similar to it? How much of it is silver value and how much of it is collectible value? I prefer coins more heavily weighted towards their melt value but I don't think i'll get away with that on these..?

You can view some of Zohar444's shooting medals here:

Just do a search here at CT or on Google.

I only have this one (more modern) piece.

I do have an older bronze shooting metal but don't know if I have a photo available. To answer your question these medals are widely collected. According to Wikipedia, shooting competitions are a way of life in the Germanic regions of Europe, especially in Switzerland. The initial Swiss Federal Shooting Festival (Eidgenössisches Schützenfest) was held in 1824.

That Frauenfeld medal you posted was also made in silver.

Hi, at the moment, I'm sitting about 50 meters away from the castle of Frauenfeld. It still looks like on the medal :). I have the medal too. It's a nice piece and as a medal of the "Eidgenössischen Schützenfeste" something typical swiss.
    Regards
