Hey all, thanks in advance for your input. The dreaded question: real or fake? Looks like S-197, I can't see a break left of the B but the bottom left foot of E looks like it's connected to B. There's a bulge in the neck. I can take close ups of certain areas if anyone wants them. Thanks

Genuine and it is S-197, the Q variety. The 197 is NOT an overdate. The break below BE is present, the bulge on the neck is the result of the hit it has received on the reverse. The die chips in the first 0 are nice and clear. S-212 has similar die chips but the positioning of LIBERTY with respect to the hair is different on 212.

Agreed with Condor, a genuine low grade, honestly worn S-197. Likely has an old cleaning which has re-toned, although that may just be photo effects. These are the types of coins that first drew me seriously into numismatics, an affordable, historical little puzzle to be studied. Have fun with it!!!!

Much appreciated! Looks like I have some homework to do. Glad I haven’t been staring at a counterfeit for all these hours:)
