Just purchased this neat large cent for my collection. Thoughts? 002.JPG 007.JPG

Draped Bust Cent. But what do you mean by 79? Is there an overdate variety?

Looks like it is over 79, but why wouldn't the last 0 also be over 9?
It looks good to this amateur.

Nice low grade coin. I am think it is an S-196, but not positive. And I also believe the die was prepared as 179 without an ending date and then changed the 79 to 80. Too lazy to go dig out my books.

I’d call it a solid good and decent surfaces too. Not a ground find. Just honest circulation wear though a bit marked and scraped. I like it though. Always a favorite. I had a 1800/79 when I was 10-12 that disappeared when we moved

I also picked up one of these when I was around 12. Paid $2 but it was (and remains) porous and barely legible. Still have it in the same 2x2...

Eleven of them from six different obv dies. Four varieties are 1800/1798 (one obv die), the other seven varieties are 1800/179. Four varieties are very rare, one is scarce to rare, one is scarce and the other five are common.

I agree it is S-196, the most common one. This is what a high grade ome looks like. Note you can see both points of the 7 at the top of the 8 and the very strong 9 inside the 0.
