Hi, This old coin was founded in an old, huge, coin collection. Now, I think this coin has been successfully identified as Austrian Thaler (Leopold I), from Breslau, but the coin value is yet to be determined. I received one suggestion that states that the catalog value is not listed, but only mentioned to be 'rare'. Anyone with any expertise in the field of European thalers, I'm looking for your help. Check out the picture and let me know what you think. -JJ-
For goodness sake Aidan get your specs on .... the coin purports to come from BRESLAU thaler, not Burgau. BIG difference. It is listed in Davenports `European crowns 1600 -1700 as #3287. Draskovic's price guide for Davenport catalogued coins notes it as `Rare' but no value given. Bachtell's `World Dollars- 1477 -1800' lists it as #1135B. A corresponding price list I have for the Bachtell volumes has this noted as being $650 in VF conditon and $950 in EF. The list is well out of date though and I suspect that yours (if genuine) would value in at around $1,000.00 The best bet to get an indication of value would be to email the images to HD Rauch auctioneers......or get hold of / look through their auction catalogues. You can email them at: rauch@hdrauch.com I'd try to get better images taken than these though. i had to play about with the contrast and colour saturation before I could see anything clearly.
Well, I was a bit ahead of you...I had already sent a picture of this coin to H.D.Rauch and just a few minutes ago, I received a reply. They would've valued this coin to be somewhere in 2000-2500 euros or 2500-3200 USD! I also posted this to couple of more auction houses and on some forums, because I want to see how much deviation there will be. -JJ-
I'm not too sure but is that really genuine? Seems too perfect for a coin that's over 300 odd years old.
Rauch are THE people for dealing with the coin type. Anyone else (myself included) is just going to be second guessing them and their knowledge of the market for that particular piece. However, in the real world, quite irrespective of anyone's `opine' the coin is valued at what someone will pay for it / what the seller will part with it for. Whether at auction or to a dealer...whatever. The value will be determined by who is awake when it comes on the market and the level of exposure it is given. I don't know exactly what it is that you are trying to achieve but as already indicated, if you are going to give bog awful images to some (as in our case) and higher quality images to others (as in Rauch's case) then you most certainly will get significant deviation in `values' given. Personally, I couldn't determine a grade with any degree of certainty from the image, but I thought it to be less than VF and in which case the figure of €2,000 - €2,500 seems to me to be rather ambitious. However, in fairness to Rauch it could be do-able on a good day. If you intend selling it, bon chance!
thats pretty much true for any coin, its value is what a person will pay for it...it might take time, but someone will buy it at what it is valued at if they want the coin Its truely a terrific coin in great shape...gx...I have seen 2000+ year old coins in almost perfect condition...its rare and they will fetch premium price... this Tetradrachm of Philetauros is over 2000 years old and is a nice as the day it was minted IMO...
That's a really nice one Drusus. My only original concern was that if it is indeed genuine but that is beyond my field.
Ka-chiiiinnnnng! I bought a coin from a dealer at the same price he valued it at five years previously. He had refused an offer I made at that time. In his mind I suppose he eventually got what he had valued it at. To my mind, inflation taken into consideration, he got far less in real terms than what I had originally offered. Monetary `value' all depends on the level of exposure (marketing) and the buyer demand prevailing at the time. Now THAT is a nice coin.
I must say that of course I cannot be 100% sure, BUT I do know where the coin has been for last 50 years; This is a piece of very large collection, collected by a finnish merchant captain in the 1930s through 1950s and all the coins are still in the same albums were this captain placed them before passing away in late 50s. Well, of course it is always possible that this coin is a fake, sold to the captain himself -JJ-
