With all the fake coins and fake PCGS slabs running around ...
I thought I would see what you all think

    Genuine or a great fake?

Looks good to me. I have to assume that the vertical scratches in the bust were determined to be adjustment marks...

what's an adjustment mark? something to do with adjusting (rotating) the dies?

No, sometimes if the blanks were too heavy instead of melting them and starting over they would take a file to the surface of the blank and take a little off to make it the correct weight. They then struck the coin on the blank. Sometimes you can see the remnants of the adjustment marks... which is what I think PCGS thought accounted for the scratches.

interesting thought duke ... actually i am just looking for a US coin (anything) from the 1700's ... and i like the dollar because it's big ... i know that's a stupid reason!

I'm trying to identify the die pairs.

The 1798 Looks like a B-11... I'm still trying to figure out the 1799. I've seen that reverse before but it's a hard one to nail down.

I dont think that's a stupid reason. Actually I think many many people agree with that. Especially the older persons with failing eye sight. A bigger piece is just nicer to hold, see and feel.

So yea imagine in your year (1799), your dollar and a half, quarter and dime all the same year!! That would look and be sooooo great!!!

I want to do that with mine but $$$ will make is slow...very slow :D

    Is B-11 good?

It's a relatively common die pair.

The original coin is a B-10. Took me a minute... but I found it.

Is that a die crack on the back?

If asked, that would be the excuse they used for the coin being in a problem free slab. But those are not adjustment marks - those are plain old fashioned post mint scratches.

If you read back through my post you will see where I always said that "PCGS was under the impression" that they were adjustment marks... my personal opinion is the same as yours Doug they look like scratches to me as well.

Yes the reverse of the original coin was struck by a cracking die. There are several die cracks on the reverse of that piece.

That makes three of us that believe them to be scratches.
