What sort of info are you looking for? The coin, if real sells for about 2000 bucks, but I have a hunch it might be fake. Basically it is a coin that is commonly faked, so an unslabbed version would make me very nervous.
I don't know that a fake would be in this condition, a older coin in unbelievable condition is more likely. I responded to a add just yesterday on CL where a guy was trying to sell a 1798 draped bust dollar, acting like he didn't know it's value. I figured if he had a computer to post on CL it would be quicker to look up that coins value. The more I looked a the picture there were things not right so I offered to buy it and meet him in the morning. The next morning I asked him to meet me at a local coin shop, he declined.
That coin is probably worth a grand even in that condition, so my spider sense is tingling. The wear on it seems artificial to me.
My main concern is if its real. I'm thinking about sending this coin out to be graded. It does have a rather large X scratched on the obverse of the coin. What other ways are there to tell if it is a fake...other then size & weight. Thanks for the help.
Size and weight are good indicators. You might also try googling to see if there are known fakes of this coin out there. Probably my biggest question to determine authenticity would be ask where you got it. Was it eBay? If so, my money would be on it being a fake. If it was from a dealer and it was a fair price, you might be ok. Likewise if it was in the attic of some 1700s New England farmhouse.
I'm wondering if it's worth the shot to send send it out to be graded? How would you grade it? The coin does have a X scratched on the obverse of the coin. Are there any other ways to tell if it is a fake...other then the diameter & weight?
Sorry about the re-post. I was trying to do way to many things at once. The coin was actually from my a friends father. He was a long time collector. The funny part is the coin was miss labeled on the 2X2 as a 1798. Thanks Noob!
Where did you get the coin? That would go a long way in helping me determine if it is worth sending in. Generally thousand dollar coins don't just appear out of no where. I'd say it would grade a 4, maybe a 6 if it is a good day and a 3 if is a bad one. The scratch might give it a details grade.
If it is a coin that's been had for a while, I'll say this is real. A forgery this good on such an old coin could only be the last ten years or so with artificial aging. A coin like this is definitely worth sending in. Worse case, you lose 50 bucks. Best case you make a thousand maybe. From my own experience, I sent in a New York colonial copper and a penny struck on a dime planchet. My local dealer who is a pretty knowledgable guy was suspicious of the underweight dime, but it came back ms65. I'm not a coin expert, but I know enough to say that if this is a forgery, it is certainly one hell of a forgery. My money on the grade is g4 details.
I'm selling it for my friend who's father was a collector. The scratch is whats concerning to me. I was thinking they made grade it details as well.
Well, here is my update on the 1799 1c piece. I did send this coin out to NGC along with some others and it came back in the dreaded body bag with "illegible date". I am a bit surprised it came back as illegible date....Oh well. I am however considering listing this coin on Ebay, any thoughts on either listing it as Buy It Now or should I roll the dice and list it at auction?
I would think one of Coin Talk's knowledgeable copper collectors would be able to attribute and date the coin using the remaining details. Marshall and Conder come to mind.
Thanks for the info mill rat. I was wondering if I should roll the dice and send it off to PCGS and see if they grade it?
It's up to you. I would think if there was enough detail left to determine the date using die markers they would have. I don't know that PCGS would be able to do what NGC could not. It might be a waste of money...but it might not be.
Sorry for not posting sooner I have been out of town. Come to think of it I'm not sure I checked the variety service. I will have to check that out. Whether I did check it or not I don't think that would change the out come of the illegible date though. I might just have to sell this coin uncertified.
