Cut down 1794 Talbot, Allum, and Lee Token. It wasn't uncommon for the US mint to strike cents and half cents on cut down colonial tokens. You can usually see a couple of letters or just a piece of the design from the under struck coin. I liked this example because it showed quite a bit of the underlying details including a lot of the lettering on the obverse and reverse.
I like it. :thumb: I have read a few articles on striking over older coins and tokens like that. I think it is fascinating.
That's really neat, it's kinda like getting two coins for the price of one. At least the historical aspect of two coins.
Looks like a C-1! :thumb: I love overstrikes and will always pay more for them. The only one I have so far is a 1788 Connecticut overstruck on a Nova Constellatio Copper. :hammer: You can send this one to me so I 'll have 2. Ribbit
It could be but I leaned towards C-1 because the pole is so fat at the end and a C-2 looks skinnier to me. :kewl: I wish we could see the date area better since that would settle it for sure. Ribbit
Makes you really think about what things were like around the early mint when you see something like this. Very cool coin & thanks for sharing.
I've never heard of this. What does this do to the value? Do these need to be graded differently? Really cool piece you have there!
Here's one on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/1797-Lib-Cap-1-2-C-Overstruck-1794Talbot-Allum-F15_W0QQitemZ300323934992 I like LD's more since the undertype is more visible. hya: Ribbit
:hammer: U hit the nail on the head toad. I my what his coin and see if I can pickup a bargain:kewl:!
