According to the paperwork that came with the coin: 5 Centimes - Copper - 28mm - 1797 Obverse: REPUBLIQUE.FRANCAISE*Dupré Reverse: CINQ.CENTIMES.L'AN.5.BB Minted in Strasbourg-BB Engraver: Augustin Dupré for Obverse and Reverse
I think it's 1796. Year 5 of the French Republic. New government, might as well start the calendar over at year 1. And the Reign of Terror was over by then, so probably a good year. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces886.html Search for your date, mintmark, and privy marks. Won't help with value, but whatever you paid for it would be a good value to assign. Neat coin.
The French Republic adopted a calendar setting Year 1 as beginning September 22, 1792, so year 2 would start Sept 22, 1793, etc. That means year 5 went from September 22, 1796, through September 21, 1797.
