    Hello,
I have been pondering buying this silver dollar now for a week, and crunch time is here... its bidding ends in 2o hours or so.

    http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1144&Lot_No=4305&Lot_Id_No=156048

My red book has a value of $16,500 for it.
    Bids are at $4k level.

Is this coin not getting higher bids because of the offset rim? Or could it be the economy?
I am looking at this as an investment and the fact It may fit into my present collection.

    Any thoughts?

well unless the chinese have gotten into toning their counterfiets before slabbing them i doubt youd cross many 1796 dollars in that condition (same goes for pcgs (thats why its graded)) scratches or not.

Did you read the description? Those are not scratches - at least scratches you are talking about. They are adjustment marks. The weight of the coin was adjusted by removing metal at the mint.

They look like adjustment marks. Overweight planchets were adjusted by filing enough metal off one face to bring the planchet down to the correct weight.

Most of the strong bidders/collectors (or their reps.)/dealers will be bidding live, on the floor.

I have seen this one in hand and I think you can find a better one with more attractive/original surfaces especially the B-4, BB-61 marriage; which is readily available...regardless of long term goals.

Just out of curiosity, how does one go about differentiating between adjustment marks and PMD?

The best answer I can give you is try reading this http://www.cointalk.com/t122883/. It begins at about post #28 and goes to #76.
