Well the local shop called me to come down and look at a large cent collection they just recently purchased. The first time they ever called me. Well the collection was a bust in my opinion - a lot of damaged coins including a 1793 wreath cent(what a shame the details were nice). In my opinion the only decent planchets were the 1808 and 1809(bought those AG coins) - was kind of disappointed. So I got to scrolling through the boxes and found these busties. Almost did not get the 1818/7 because of a couple of hits on the obverse, but to my naked eye I liked the color. Both the silver coins have an old cleaning, but you can see them starting to retone. Two sets of pictures for the 1796 to help toad confirm the attribute of S-100. See jloring I like some low grade stuff also.
The closest I can come to is a S-100. Everything I can see, matches up to the 100 so I agree with your attribution. :thumb: I likes! :eat: Ribbit
I picked up my first 1796 DBC last week (still hasn't arrived) and it's a S-110, the most common of the year (price sure didn't reflect it) and I'll be tickled when I get a S-100. I spend most of my money on Connecticut coppers but try to pick up a couple of needed DBC's each month, to keep that part of my collection growing. Ribbit
Being as it is a 1796, at $50 its a steal no matter what variety it is. I don't have my note here at work so I can't do a second verification. Possibly tomorrow.
Assuming Toad and Breen are both correct, you have a R-5 coin Mark. I will check my CQR to see what it says about the S-100. Breens book says the bottom range of the CC is made up of 4 VG8's (Not bad for $50! Grade wise low ( I grade the obverse AG-3), but hey, we paid more for a very mediocre dinner for 2 in cape Cod a couple of weeks ago). It is a scarce to rare coin. That 1815 quarter is also very nice Mark. I have been looking for one. Very nice purchases. Congratulations. Eduard
That's a nice group of coins! Having the first chance to look through an old collection of cents like that must be exciting. I like the quarter and the half too.
Thanks all - hope it can be confirmed as S-100. Now they did query me about my new 1796 - even asked what I paid for it. So the next 1796 might be more expensive - of course this is the first 1796 draped bust cent I have seen them have. What impressed me the most is david called me and I think I got first crack at them. And ksparrow - I was very exited to get there to see the coins, but was very disappointed with the coins themselves. The only key date in the collection was a 1793 wreath cent - image someone working the rim and making the ovberse a bowl, it was that bad. On the reverse the wreath was clear, but that was about it. The 1811 was just as bad - probably worse. Some of the middle date cents and braided hair cents were $10 or $15. Heck even they said there are some pretty ugly coins in the collection. This 1796 was not part of the collection. In a few weeks I will go back and see if they still have the 1857. The 1857 was not bad and I think it was the large date that I still need for my dansco album. Still all in all it was a good day.
What condition would you say the 25 & 50 cent pieces grade at?? They look nice to newbie me & I would have bought them if they were reasonable...:thumb:
OK, I've had a chance to check it over with my notes and with Breen and I concur, it is S-100. The obverse is almost certainly that of S-100 or 101, and the real key is the distance from the left bow to the CE of CENT. Almost all of the reverse dies have ONE CENT very high in the wreath. There are only a couple that dont. On the other dies that don't, most of them have the 6 solidly imbedded in the bust. Of the three that don't one has the leaf cluster below A2 almost reaching the F in OF, one has it to the right of the left edge of A2, and S-100 has it just a little to the left of the left edge of A2. That matches this coin.
Thanks condor! The 1815 quarter I think would be VF20/25 - I netted it to fine and price was reasonable. Probably a tpg would put this the VF20/30 range. Need to retone a little more. The 1818 I netted to XF40 - probably a tpg would go AU, but I netted for the hits and the old cleaning. I really like the way it looks in hand - the retoning is nice. As for the price being reasonable - nope, but the color and looks in hand roped me in. Still satisfied with the coin. And the 1796 is a po-1 in my opinion.
I'd say PO-2 is more like it. The reverse is not worn smooth and there is some detail and the obverse has plenty of detail. :thumb: I could even see a FR-2 overall, because of the strong obverse. :kewl: Ribbit
There is Poor-2 and Fair-2, but while there is a Poor-1, I do not believe there is a Fair-1 but I don't know for sure. :goofer: I also wonder if there is a Fair-3? Ribbit Ps: Who's on 1st? :goofer:
The scale, the way I have always known it is Poor-1 or Basal state 1, Fair -2, AG-3, G-4,5,& 6, VG7,8, 10, F-12 & 15, VF-20, 25,30, & 35, XF 40, 45, AU 50, 55,
Nice Pickups young man. Best make sure you take a gander at that 57. They seem to be far and few between around here. The BHD is thumbs up good...
