Is this coin a fake? I am not qualified to make the judgement myself.. as I am not familiar with this type!
It's a fake. The whole look of the coin screams it. But on a more fact-based basis: The obverse is clearly taken from the BB-51 obverse. That is the 1795 Draped Bust Off-Center die. The reverse of the actual BB-51 was also used for 1796 BB-62, BB-63, BB-66, 1797 BB-72, and 1798 BB-81. This genuine reverse is characterized by Small Letters, Berry under center of A of STATES (diagnostic), wreath composed of palm branch right and olive branch left, the latter with seven berries. The reverse on the OP coin is not that reverse. The OP coin's reverse is characterized by Large Letters, Berry under left leg of A of STATES, Appears to have six berries. So the OP's coin does not pass either the "smell" test nor the attribution test. Fake all the way.
Oh, come on! Don’t you believe those stories they tell on eBay about how the kid got this family heirloom from his dear, beloved grandpa? It can almost break your heart.
