Here is a decent 1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. What would you grade this one? Thanks for looking Ben
Nice----I almost bought one last year---it was graded F NET VG by SEGS....but passed it up. As for this coin---I know that they are weakly struck and the detail isn't great so maybe G6-VG. Speedy
Leadfoot: Aside from the fact that the piece is light in color (possibly from lighting) what makes you think that the coin is cleaned? I would still like to own it.
The coloration is the first clue. A coin that hasn't circulated for over two hundred years shouldn't be this white, no matter where it was stored. The fact that there's darker areas hidden in the recesses and the fields are lighter is another clue. I could be wrong -- all IMHO...Mike p.s. all of this is not to say that this coin is not a nice coin or desireable -- it is both -- and I would be happy, also, to own it.
Thanks for the nice comments. I too believe it has had a cleaning in the past. Maybe more than one as well. Ben
Bone: It is quite apparent that you are not the proper custodian for this coin! As a result, the coin police will be at your door shortly and they will confiscate the piece for proper custodial transfer to an authorized custodian. As such, I have volunteered to maintain proper custodial care of the piece until such time as it can be pried out of my cold dead hands! (Thanks to Charleston Heston for letting me finally use a quote of his.)
How strange. I was looking for two Charlton Heston movies yesterday - El Cid and Mother Lode. I located one - El Cid, but Mother Lode is a tough find... Ben
Bone, nice coin you have there. I just picked up a 1795 Half off of Ebay a couple weeks ago. It is only in AG. but it was outrageuosly affordable. I've sent it in to ANACS for grading and encapsulation. It's an O-110a variety which is an R4. I'm no expert in Flowing Half Halves or anything, but is that the variety you have anO-110 (lack of die cracks on obverse for O-110a)?
Just because it has been cleaned doesn't mean that they would slab it as such. Almost all coins from those days were cleaned at some point!! Most slabbing companies would not give this coin a net grade at all. Very nice early silver half you have there!! Good Luck I would say VG to F Tom
Ben, Every time I see this coin I think of a beautiful lady riding a motorcycle with the wind in her hair one of the best coin designs every from or mint. BRUCE"THE FRANK GROUP"
Who is SEGS and isn't that a bit rich for your blood? Not as a negitive comment but most normally you can afford coins more in my rage of expenditure Ruben
Ruben: SEGS= Soverign Entities Grading Services. Sometimes they are good, but I did not know that they net graded!
Frank is right about who SEGS is....and yes that was alittle rich---that is why I passed up. The guy wanted $1500 for it---and he would have let me pay on it every week till it was paid off but I don't like to do that and also since it was a problem coin I was more willing to pass it up---now if it had been a no problem coin I would have jumped at it and would have been paying on it for the rest of my life--- Speedy
Well Ruben---when I buy a coin I don't care who slabs it because I'm buying the coin so I must be the one that decides if they are good or not---from what I've read and from what I've seen they are alright with fakes--- but then you need to be really careful because they slab fakes sometimes---not really fakes but you know coins minted by a private mint---they don't always put on the slab that it is a private minted coin either.... So just know your coins and look at them and sometimes you can get a heck of a deal---they say that SEGS is great at varieties. Speedy
Ruben, Larry Briiggs of SEGS is considered one of the top experts in the field of Early American Coins (Cents to Dollars) and on Counterfeit detection! Everything that gets certified, graded and attributed by SEGS, must go through Larry before it is slabbed and shipped. So, he has the final say on everything! If you ever attend a Coin Show and find out Larry is there, go visit him (that is, if you can get the table) as he is a heck of a nice guy and you can learn a lot from him. Most Coin Dealers and even other Coin Grading Service Company Reps. will take coins to Larry to get his opinion...especially when a coin's authenticity is in question! Frank
