This was my shot to one up last week's find of the S-132 R5+. It seems there are several eagle eyed and well heeled bidders who spotted it this time. I had it most of the week, but it increased by a factor of ten the last day. It appears to be the 22nd known coin of this variety based on information on Heritage which listed 21 known..

Congratulations to the winning bidder and I hope it was one of us on CT.

Hmmm....somebody must have wanted it very badly.

I guess i'm not that much of a copperhead after all - I never would have bid that high on that coin, even if it is an R5+

But, congratulations to the winner anyway.

I was really hoping you would win this one, Marshall. I don't know who won it, but I do know there are very few Sheldon varieties which pull an r.6 rating. Some serious Sheldon collector just filled a tough, tough hole... according to CQR, this coin rates thousands even in net AG.

Seller got a pleasant surprise... it's obvious s/he didn't know what s/he had, and was likely expecting much less on this one.

There were six different bidders who topped my $500 bid, so it certainly drew the attention of the serious Sheldon community. I figured if anyone topped my bid, they were serious variety collectors and I had no hope of staying in the competition. I didn't really expect six of us would have recognized it.

I was almost as surprised that Yancy's S-133 went for only $120, even though it's rarity of R5 and VG-F grade were in the title. Then his S-147 R5- went for about $360, which was where I expected both to settle. I suspect both could draw $500 from the right collectors.

It was really an unbelievable day for rarities which also included a very common S-223 in it's very rare terminal die state which went for over $100.

Any one of these would make a great week on the Bay, but this was just...unbelievable.

I wasn't watching the 133, but the two I was watching went for more than I was willing to pay. Sigh...

I haven't looked at the S-133 so I don't know what the condition was, but While it is listed as an R-5, it seems to be a "common" R-5. I've seen a LOT of them an they seem to come on the market fairly frequently. I would think it should probably actually be listed as an R-5- at best. A listing of R-4+ wouldn't surprise me.

The S-133 was Vg-F and sold for scuzzy money. Someone picked up a bargain, even if the rarity is over rated. I noticed butternut shows two available, one G5 at $1,000 and a second VG10 at $3,250. It also showed three S-147s ($875-$1,250). But there are NO S-53s. (Or 132s fo that matter)
