The unique 1794 NC-7 according to Heritage has: "The edge was lettered twice, once with the 1793 edge device, and a second time with the 1794 edge device" I have no idea what that means.
I would imagine that the lettering on the edge was different in 1793 and 1794. This unique variety likely has both.
Sounds interesting,Sheldon NC7 was changed to Sheldon 20a. 1794 Liberty Cap Large Cent Specifications Circulation Strikes: 918,521 Proof Strikes: 0 Content: 100% Copper Weight: 13.5 grams Diameter: 28 millimeters Edge: There are 2 different possible edges: 1. Were they struck in a collar or another type of edge lettering device?
They were not struck in a collar, the edge inscription was applied to the planchet before striking by rolling it between two edge dies each of which contained half of the inscription.
