This is a Large Cent which I recently acquired which had been listed on EBay as a 1796. These are the best images I can extract from the sellers photos off Ebay. I'll post some marked up photos as I go through the attribution process.
I think I remember that coin. I am still searching for a decent one for my album - not sure I want to crack out my ANACs coin, but I might.
Considering the variation in coloring of the various pictures, I have no idea what it will look like in hand. Anyway, this was a tad under $70 and the last one I got was a tad under $600. The Obverse seems to be good enough to eliminate all but Obverses, 6,10,11,12,17 and 19. The Reverse only has one prominent double leaf under the D that helps. The angle (more obtuse) I think will get me there. I can't quite tell if it's under the upright or if the tip is damaged.
I think when I saw it the coin was sitting around $25. If I could have saw the date on it I might have bid, but decided I did not want to take a chance. Worked out for both of us.
It sure did. Having the transition coins from lettered (76a) to plain (76b) made the 96 an easy error to spot. Here is my first look at the reverse. I think the markers eliminate most of the reverses before even beginning to look at which ones match the known obverse markers for the obverse.
Hopefully I'll pick up my 1794 cent (Head of 1794) at the Baltimore Whitman show next week. I say "hopefully" because the dealer I bought it from is VERY slow about getting it slabbed. Paid for it at the Baltimore Whitman show in March. The guy has very good material and I'll probably buy more from him BUT from now on I'll take the coin and get it slabbed myself.
Most definitely. It'll be one of my top coins. As I recall(!) it's a VERY nice looking coin. Original smooth surfaces. Looking for it to come back XF-40.
S-65 This is the best actual representation I've gotten for the coins. I think too much light was washing out the natural look of the coin.
See if anybody can see something unique about this and think of why it happened. Of course I'm speculating at this point.
Marshall: You got a real find there for what you paid. I think you're incredibly lucky too! I feel happy for you! I saw your 1794 One Cent coin up for sale too on ebay but I've been banned from selling/buying there along with Overstock Auctions. The rules these sites employ are no good for (coin) sellers but that's a different subject altogether. This 1796 One Cent I got in the mail today, the seller wanted $150 for. Do you think it's worth the money or should I send it back?
I can't ever send back these treasures. It' about right for a S-89 in net Fr2. R3+ ... 200-300 extant. Now when I win the lottery, I'll get snobbish about these thing, but until then, nice pickup.
No chance that last "4" digit is perhaps really a "6"? I'm not any expert here but thought it might be useful to bring up.
If it were a 6, It would be a new variety AND struck on an old planchet WITH a collar to make the edge inscription. Not likely when it's now visible and the diagnostics for the S-23 are ALMOST perfect,
