Howdy jbatchelor - Welcome to the Forum ! Looks like a copy to me. Here is a link that will tell you about the genuine examples - http://www.coinfacts.com/colonial_coins/brasher_doubloons/brasher_doubloon.htm
1787 braser doubloon it might not be real, but i found it in a location where i found lots of 1700 buttons and coins,i have collected coins several decades,my button collection is one of the best in the state,or i should say in the bank.when i found it it was dirty,i thought it was a large coat button, just glanced at it,just a few weeks ago i looked closer,i seen what looks like gold, under the dirt,i know this is a rare type of coin, but what was it doing in a location wher several george washington style buttons were,
If you check th elink I posted you will see that there are only 7 of these coins known to exist. And they know where all 7 are. So it is more than extremely unlikely that you found another one. However, there are thousands of copies of them out there and have been for more years than I've been alive. People find them all over the place. But of you want to know for sure, take it to a reputable coin dealer. If he says he isn't sure, highly unlikely, then send it in to get it authenticated. I absolutely guarantee you that the dealer will be more than glad to help you do that. But honestly, you have a better chance of winning the lottery - 3 times - than you do of that coin being real.
Did you read what you found at the link ? If you did then I can only assume that you think it possible that there are more undiscovered specimens out there. Yes, it is possible. But as I said, you'd have a better chance of winning the lottery 3 times than you would of finding an unknown example of the Brasher Doubloon. So what do you think the odds are ?
13 years on the computer , Gosh you are old . Sorry Doug couldn't help myself with that one . Rusty:hail:
not good but he seems to have the preconditions for a new discovery. If there is documentation that only 7 were minted, then the odds are MUCH lower And that is what i was thinking...yes. Ruben
