Below please find a link to a 1787 Vermontensium specimen for bid on ebay. To me, something about this specimen doesn't look right. At first, I thought the specimen had been cleaned. However, the Auctiva image hosting shows the specimen otherwise. That said, when I corrected all of the images in PhotoShop, the specimen's color, letter weights, and granularity still looks off. http://cgi.ebay.com/Rare-1786-Vermont-Copper-VERMONTENSIUM-RR-8-/170479411469?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item27b15d610d For reference purposes, I have attached a link to Notre Dame's website with a comparison specimen: http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/ColCoinImages/VT-Copper/VT-Bressett4-D.obv.jpg Thoughts? You may find this comment a bit weird, but the planchet flaws look original. These would be almost impossible to reproduce as a counterfeit.
I don't have the specific reference for the Vermonts but I think the general look of the piece looks good
Thanks for taking a look. I suppose it could be an offset, weak strike on a very poor planchet, however, the 'eye' and the rays on the Reverse looks a bit too sharp. The coloring and details of the piece also looks a bit 'electro-typish' to me.
