I won this last night in a raffle at my coin club. It was listed as a 1786 New Jersey Copper with a defective planchet. I can pick out the 178 part but the 6 seems suspect. I don't really collect these but it is a neat and interesting part of history. Perhaps one of the experts could tell me more about this coin. I am guessing the grade is AG. What kind of value would it have? Thanks
They were only made for three years (1786, 1787, and 1788). I can see a 6, but I can't mark it up like I usually would. There are a lot of different varieties. Really neat! I hope to get one of those someday.
Nice coin - I think it could be Maris 23-P which is a common variety. I could be wrong, however - there are many varieties and I'm not experienced in this field of collecting. http://www.coinfacts.com/colonial_coins/new_jersey_coppers/maris_23P.htm This is the old Coinfacts page for Maris 23-P. I think it could be an earlier die state of 23-P. A relic of the Articles of Confederation - great history.
