My Dad gave me this coin. I have no idea what or where its from. I see 1783 del gratia carlos III on the obverse. On the reverse ishispanic etind rex 2 RPR. I think its silver? Is this a valueable old coin? Orgins? If anybody knows anything about this coin please help me. Thanks :thumb:
Well, it may be a Spanish Pillar Dollar if it is genuine. Could you post a picture of the edge so we can check for a seam? Google "Spanish Pillar Dollar" to learn all about it.
I tried to get a good pic, it just would not register its so minute. The edge is really worn w/ a pattern of a line dash line(|-|) alternting sizes back & forth. The edge is worn. Does this help?
Its a nice Spanish 2 Realies silver piece. King of Spain carlos on obverse. Pillars of Hercules (Gibralter) reverse. A very nice coin. edited
interesting I believe Ripley, your coin is Lima,Peru  and brewerbonsai coin is Bolivia, Potosi ( monogram PTS)
Hi Irina, no my coin was minted in Madrid. It has the M mint mark with a crown over it. feeling better today ?
Hi Ripley! What's up with you? Well, now, put your glasses on, get another one in hand and looooook! what you call M mint mark, it is first LI on top of this two letters goes M, and next letter E goes on top of A you put together and you will get LIMAE which is Peru.
Yep, I agree with Irina, on the OP's coin being a 2 real from Potosi. Ripley's coin does look like it has the ME - LIMAE monogram from Lima. But I also see the M with crown atop to the left of the ME, so the ME might just be moneyers initials and not a mintmark.... I do not know which initials were being used at the time so I cannot say for sure. Also the M E on Ripley's coin looks like there is a little bit of seperation between the two letters, and I have a few from Lima with the LIMAE mintmark monogram, and the M and E are conjoined. Gorgeous coin Ripley, with an absolutely beautiful portrait. The mintmark for Madrid is usually an 'M' with a crown atop it. Such as on this two reales of mine, to the left of the coat of arms, below the letter 'R' .
Sorry, but it isn't. Ripley's coin is a 1 escudo from the Madrid mint. See pics below. The red arrow points to the crowned M mint mark. The turquois arrow points to the MF assayers mark. The other picture is another coin of the same date and mint mark that shows them more clearly.
well. now I'm confused even more. if it's 1793 1 escudo, it should be Mint mark with very clear M and crown on top, and on right Mint master initials MF very clear. so I'm not sure ....
It is very clear, on the coin. It's the picture that isn't very clear because it's out of focus. This is what the Lima mint mark looks like for 1783 coins - big difference.
Well, at any rate all the fuss shamed me into hitting the books again. Looks like I was right on this one, but I did learn a lot more about the Spanish empire and thier world wide mints. I am glad you like this particulat coin, because it was the first gold coin I ever owned. I also have a 2 escudo though not as nice also minted in Madrid.
well, I'm sorry, but ME looks for me like ME, not MF. also ME may be on left side or on right side. and I do not see in Numismatics master 1893 1 escudo in silver?! it's GOLD. so forgive me
