Hi everyone, I just have a question about the restrike 1780 Thalers.
I have 3 of them sitting here in front of me. All of them the same restrike variety. But when I line up the obverses the edge lettering does not line up. I'm curious as to how the edge lettering is (pressed?) into the edge of the coin. Did they not care about having them all the same?
Are Presidential dollars the same as the 1780 Thalers, with the edge lettering being in a different spot in comparison to the obverse and reverse designs?

I got one. They're nice, but I know nothing about them.

The obverse/reverse strike is made, then the coins are randomly inserted into a separate articulated collar and squeezed. As a result there is no correlation between the orientation of the obverse/reverse and the edge lettering.

No. :) Edge inscriptions have always been, and still are, pretty common on European coins. But the question of how they are oriented has never been an issue. Some euro collectors, for example, actually want both "A" and "B" types - but as hontonai wrote, that is a basically random orientation.
