Can anyone help with a 1752 Ducat that i have, I believe this coin was restruck at sometime in its history and i would be grateful if anyone has any info. about it, i.e. how can you tell the difference between the two. Many thanks BazBay.
Howdy BazBay - Welcome to the Forum !! As a collector of ducats I might be able to offer you some help. But I need a bit more information first. The gold ducat - there were also some silver issues - were minted by just about every European country at one time or another. So I need to know which country among other things. Posting a pic of the coin would be the easiest and most helpful way to identify the coin. Can you do that ?
Dear GDJMSP, Thanks for your quick response, It is an Austrian Ducat, I tried to get into your email address but had no luck,If you give me your email address i will foward a picture to you. Regards BazBay.
Hmmmm - don't understand why the email function isn't working. I'll ask Peter to look at that. Anyway - you can sure get it this way - gdjmsp@qwest.net
Unfortunately the pic did not come through so I am unable to identify the coin. But based on the year of 1752 and the country of Austria I am fairly sure there are only 3 choices it could be. Two of them would be Maria Theresa ducats with one struck at the Graz mint and the other struck at the Prague mint. Both coins have values that approximate each other and range from $80 in VG to $600 in XF. The third choice would be a bishopric coin struck at the Salzburg mint with a value from $125 in VG to $1,600 in XF. The mintage for all of these coins is pretty much unknown without doing some specialized research. But as for the value you can see that it can vary greatly. I would also say that without seeing the coin these values may be off to a large degree as well. They are the published values listed in Krause and can only serve as a very rough guide. It is not unusual for them to be way too low and way too high. It just depends on the coin.
