Hi, I was wondering the value of this coin, here's the description:
Gold half-escudo, 1745-AJ, VG10. KM361.1, .917 gold, .0498 oz. Philip V. Crowned "M" mintmark (Madrid). 1/16 of a "doubloon". Nice little historical gold coin. Past provenance indicated the coin was salvaged from a shipwreck, though this is not particularly noticeable, nor was the name of the wreck given. (WCS-001V) $90.00

    Is it worth 90 bucks?

The 2002 Krause 3rd Ed. lists it at $50 in VG, and $80 in F. The picture you posted is of a G coin, which IMHO is worth a very small premium over its BV of ~$23.

Shipwreck provenance of a commonly available coin generally adds nothing to its coin collector value, although it might be worth a little more to a history buff.

    wow

So 90 bucks is not that good of a deal? Wow I thought I was getting a good deal. I heard from a clark smith at www.coinvault.com that this was cheap!
Satakoo, do you think I should trade an MS69 NGC or MS69 PCGS 1/10 oz american gold eagle for it?

Howdy GCL - Welcome to the Forum !!

I already gave my opinion on the CU forum - so I saw little point in repeating it here.

But I will comment on this - if Clark told you that $90 was cheap for that coin - I can only assume he misunderstood something.

I will look at your opinion again.
I told him exactly what the seller of the coin told me, its condition, etc. He obviously wasnt very interested because he told me he didnt want to see a picture of it!
    heres what he said:
90 is cheap for a 1745 1/2 Escudo with no damage.

    I don't need a picture.

I have emailed this guy waay to many times about the coin i was going to order and that i eventually ordered. He said I was welcome to order from him again though and that he would answer any coin question. So I asked him that one. The > is what I said.

Even though he said he didnt need a picture, I sent him another email and told him the coin is probably only Good condition and I sent him the picture anyway.

Well there is one way to find out what it is worth - offer to sell the coin to Clark and see he offers you.
