Just wondering if anyone can judge by some photos if this is a genuine coin or if it is fake. Came from a jar one of the locals had in Roatan, Honduras, said he had it for years but in hard times needed to sell it. DSCF0025.jpg DSCF0024.jpg

I can't tell from the picture. It could be a cast or it could be corrosion.

It's a modern reproduction comonly sold to tourists in the Caribbean.

We figured it was fake so didn't buy but the curiosity was always there. Thanks!

A lot of Central and South American countries (also Middle-Eastern), have "antiquities" that they sell to unsuspecting tourists. Some of the items are actually very well done. The stories are always the same "been in the family for generations and we have to sell it now for food" or "it was found outside of an archaeological dig" and so on. Every winter, after the tourists would return from their vacations in the tropics, I would see dozens of examples of pre-Columbian artifacts or rare coins and hear the same stories. They all thought there were going to be rich. It's a cottage industry down there and some families have been doing it for years.
