Hey all, You were so helpfull the last time with US coins I have a bunch of UK and world coins 2. I especially like crowns. Here is one I just picked up - in a job lot of crowns that that included a couple other 17th Century crowns - that appears to be a bit rare. I could use some help to determine it's grade as I am finding it hard to be objective lol. It has XVIII edge lettering - forget the layer on the composite pic that shows the 1662 date edge that is for one of the others. Lemme know whatcha think about grade and what it's commercial value is. Thanx again, Daz
I don't think I've said this to you yet Daz, so welcome to the forum. The elephant beneath the bust pegs it as KM#428.3, with the so-called "third bust" (the smaller one) of Charles II. The edge lettering stands for the regnal year of issue. To me the picture looks like a prototypical G-4, heavily worn, all design features flat, but even the weakest ones at faintly visible. I'm not into British crowns, but since my 1999 2d Ed. 17th Century Krause lists it at $175 in VG, my guess for a current retail value would be around $150-200. Were there any other "goodies" in the lot?
Dazman, the elephant provenance mark is an indicator that the silver came from West Africa (Ghana or Nigeria),which is why the gold coins with this mark became known as 'Guineas'. Aidan.
