A friend of mine recently found a threepence like the one featured Coin Here He was offered several thousand UK pounds for it. Are these coins quite rare?? Does anybody have any more info on them. I'm not sure if what he is offered was a good deal or not. Regards Stebiz
Have never come across one before but reading that article I would have to say yes, but i am no expert. Any chance we can get to see a pic or scan of the coin your friend found?? De Orc
They are quire rare (as an offer of "several thousand pounds" would indicate), but they are commonly faked as well, so for your friend to receive the maximum price at auction (the best way to get the maximum price on this nice of a coin) it would need to be authenticated, graded, and slabbed by one of the major third party grading firms and then offered in the US at auction. If he intends to sell it in the UK then grading is not so important (third party grading isn't as prevalent on your side of the pond), but the sale price will likely be lower too, based on the fact that the coin is from the colonies.
There are several different die varieties for these things and that can affect the value considerably. You say it is like the one pictured in the linked article. EXACTLY like it? Because the one pictured in the article is supposed to be a Nor 34 which is a very rare variety. (Unfortunately in the reference I'm looking at it mentions a feature that should be there and that one that don't have it are 19th century fakes. I don't see that feature on that coin.)
