I hope this the right place to post this ? I was looking at some coins and found this, "James Buchanan President of The United States 1857" On Back a flag White man and Native. I looked for like coin, found some , but non matched I could not find one like this one. I do not think it is a dollar you spend. What say you? It"s a bold looking coin.
I don't know much about medals, but Google lens comes up with a lot of results including these: Bronze-plated Gold: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/exonumia349552.html Bronze: https://www.blackmountaincoins.com/...lard-fillmore-77mm-bronze-presidential-medal/
Would be nice if we could see the whole darn thing. Cut back on the lighting @Real Slick. Try this program: PhotoScape, FREE DL. Photo Editor Software to Easily Edit Digital Images. Free Download. #1 Rated Editing Program. (nchsoftware.com)
I believe that you have one of these medals. This is a miniture of a Buchanan Indian Peace Medal. The U.S. mint sold these 50 and more years ago as a "youth set" that was priced at something like $1 each. Later the mint sold the whole set with an album, which is the set I have. The mint has issued additional pieces as the new presidents take office. I think they are asking $15 a piece for them now. All of the older presidents before the George W. Bush are no longer offered. These pieces are not very valuable. The original medals were made in the 19th century. They were much large and have much better detail and strike execution. Pieces in silver were given to the Indians as peace offerings. Hence the name "Indian Peace Medals." Copper pieces were offered to the general public. Buying the silver ones is risky because the government can come along and say they were taken from an Indian and confiscate it. There are collectors, but I'm not one of them. I don't have an original 19th century Buchanan (These things have very low mintages, but also a limited collector following so they don't bring super high prices.), but I do have a Millard Fillmore piece with the same reverse. This piece is 76 mm with a mintage of 12 in copper.
Thanks f for your input, but I can not find a picture like my coin? a Shinning gold colored 21. grams bigger ten a 1/2 dollar
I think I have identified the piece for you. Here it is beside a half dollar. It is about 34 mm in diameter while a half dollar is officially 30.6 mm. As for the color, it is a brassy orange which might seem to resemble gold to some. The chance that the mint would have made one of these medalets in gold after the Gold Surender Order of 1933 is nil. The government was really fussy about that. Indidently, if you have questions about other items, it is much better if you supply a photo of the whole piece. Showing parts of it only makes the identification process harder.
