Hello! I'm looking for the ID of this bugger. I've searched the web in any way I could think of and still no result, but I keep thinking I saw something like it somewhere before. It has a lion and 2 persons (pope and ???) on one side, the other side showing a lion in front of a column with a statue on it (???). Legend is (or look like) this: Side 1... LIBERREVINO?RIGEOPERNEGAT Side 2... ROSISLEONEREORIS???SLIBERAT Anyone know what this could be ? Thanks!
It's a Dutch jeton. The lion is tied to a pole, and one inscription is a quote from Aesopus: "Leonem loris mvs liberat" - The mouse frees the lion by gnawing, or something like that. This represents William of Orange (as the mouse) freeing the Netherlands (lion) from Spanish Catholic rule. Someone with more experience can give you a better description, but I believe that's the basic idea.
This guy apparently purchased on like yours on ebay and the folks there tell him basically the same thing as Marianne.Unfortunately, the picture link to ebay is no longer valid. Here it is. http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=6&threadid=257950&STARTPAGE=1 EDIT:Gee.guess I should have clicked the link to his collection..here it is!DOH!
Well, thank you very much to both of you for your help, this one gave me a hard time (but it finally worth it!).
I hope someone knows the other inscription. My wild attempt to translate: Freedom becomes stronger through attempts to subdue it.
